There is an ice swimming group in Minneapolis that meets regularly during the winter in surrounding lakes.
The group, the Ice Water Butterflies is a recreational group that meets to swim in local lakes.
Seth Baetzold, English Channel aspirant has participated in a few of the gatherings.
Seth is training for the English Channel and hopes the freezing cold water will give a taste of what the English Channel has to offer.

An article in the StarTribune describes how scientists are studying some of the swimmers blood for resistance to cold water. Many rumors circulate about why certain individuals can tolerate such cold temperatures. One being that these tough swimmers have a larger percentage of brown fat.
